Black Watch

The bermudian yawl BLACK WATCH was built in 1938 for the Schaefer family of Larchmont, New York. She was constructed at the Nevins shipyard on City Island, based on designs by the firm Sparkman & Stephens. She was the first model to have her hull design tested in a tank by S&S. In 1941, the Schaefer family made the boat available to the U.S. Navy. She carried out coastal surveillance patrols (as part of the "Corsair Fleet") during World War II, earning a battle flag for driving off German submarines off the coast of New England. The Schaefer family donated the boat to Tabor Academy in 1947, where she was renamed TABOR BOY. The school sold her in 1954 to Dr. George Brooks, who restored her original name. He remained her owner for 51 years and sailed out of the Larchmont Yacht Club. In the Fall of 2005 several New York Yacht Club members came together to buy and restore BLACK WATCH. Everything possible has been accomplished to return her to first class condition with an emphasis on keeping her as original as possible.
