Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill joins the ranks of our superheroes. He earned this place through his military service in numerous conflicts, his tenure in the British Parliament, and his leadership as Prime Minister of Great Britain—first during World War II and again from 1951 to 1955. After the 1940 retreat in the face of the German advance, he led the Allies to victory and played a pivotal role in France's resurgence by welcoming and supporting General de Gaulle’s Free French forces. This portrait is based on a black-and-white photograph by Walter Stoneman (1876–1958), taken during an official session at 10 Downing Street on April 1, 1941.
