Description

This scene was taken near Busan, South Korea, in 1971. On a bamboo raft, female workers thread pierced scallop shells, separated by plastic tubes, onto wires. These wires are then suspended from the rafts seen on the left and in the background by male workers, all under the supervision of a foreman (the standing figure with the hat on the left). The suspended shells are then used to collect the swimming larvae of the Pacific cupped oyster (Crassostrea gigas), which are then reared to market size.

Feature

  • Oil on canvas stretched over a wooden frame, 46x61x2 cm; the edges are painted, everything is ready for hanging
