Description

A legendary statesman and military leader: This full-length, low-angle portrait depicts Charles Martel, born around 688 in Andenne near Namur, Belgium, and died on October 22, 741, in Quierzy. As Duke of the Franks and Mayor of the Palace, he ruled Francia from 718 until his death. Charles Martel is most famous for his decisive victory against the Umayyad Muslim army at the Battle of Poitiers in 732, an event that saved Europe (excluding the Iberian Peninsula) from a first Muslim invasion. A majestic representation: Charles Martel is dressed in the attire of a military leader, with armor and a purple cloak, symbols of his power and status. He holds a shield adorned with a cross, recalling his role as protector of Christendom, as well as a sword, a symbol of his military strength. His mace rests on the helmet of the Umayyad leader. The details of his armor and accessories are painted with precision, highlighting his imposing and determined appearance.

A historical legacy: His son, Pepin the Short, founded the Carolingian dynasty in 754, thus perpetuating the political and military legacy of Charles Martel. This portrait pays tribute to his crucial role in European history and his determination to defend his territory.
