Winston Churchill

Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill fought in numerous wars, served in the British Parliament, was Prime Minister of Great Britain during the Second World War and again from 1951 to 1955. Following the 1940 retreat due to the German advance, he led the Allies to victory and played a pivotal role in France's resurgence by welcoming and supporting the Free French of General De Gaulle.

He wrote dozens of books, hundreds of articles, and thousands of letters, and was awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize in Literature. Sir Winston Churchill began painting in 1915—during a difficult period in his political career—and pursued this passion for the rest of his life, creating works that included depictions of his carp pond at Chartwell and landscapes of Marrakech.

The artwork is based on a photograph attributed to Walter Stoneman (1876–1958), likely taken during a session at 10 Downing Street on April 1, 1941. The negatives are currently held by the National Portrait Gallery in London. The specific image used is a cropped version that appeared in numerous publications about Churchill throughout the second half of the 20th century.
